From what I can see, the main purpose for people to stay in VanHorn is on the way to somewhere else. The beautiful El Capitan Hotel was a wonderful place to stay for our visit to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, but we didn't really see anything else of interest in the town. It's too bad the town leaders can't find other things to attract visitors.

Van Horn is a city where there are a lot of commuters coming in and leaving (especially workers in the trucking industry, but there were also a many families there as well (Spring Break time). Van Horn is a city where you stop to rest, not really to sight-see although areas like Marfa, Big Bend, McDonald Observatory, Davis/Guadalupe Mountain are nearby. Sunrises are beautiful.

Stayed here six years ago and is just as good then and now. Only change is the refrigerator was larger than last time. All was good in the room. Great to see that good places are still in business. Good staff on duty at midnight when we arrived at the motel.

Super 8 stay was very nice and restful; however, Sands Motel experience horrible due to no actual mattress and having to sleep on box springs! We drove around a bit just to look and all lodgings are easy to get to from Interstate 10. We did enjoy our meal at Lindsey's Cafe. I'm very particular about Spanish rice and I'd eat theirs any day and the staff was very nice.

Small town struggling probably due to the pandemic issues.
Small town struggling probably due to the pandemic issues. Many closed businesses. We did not stay for any visiting purposes, just an overnight for travel twice in one week (each way). We did have a great local Hispanic/Southwest style breakfast at Mom's Cafe, a tiny local gem. Another breakfast at Gilbert's restaurant because Mom's was closed on Monday was not bad, but not as good as Mom's.
This was terrible! They had had a fire and the room smelled of smoke! We were seriously concerned for our health as we tried to sleep and the smell felt overbearing.
I made this reservation far enough in advance to have been forewarned of the smell. After driving 9 hours we were stuck there and the hotel was booked full.
In the morning we left ASAP, David at the front desk could not compensate us in anyway because I used BOOKING.COM.
TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!
This was a horrible stay!!!!
Very comfortable room. Clean, decent size, decent bathroom though the sink was kind of small and lacking in a place to hang the towels. No big deal though, still a decent bathroom. Nice big shower. The Bed was comfortable and decent internet and TV. Microwave and Fridge. Ice machine worked fine. For the price, Desert Inn stacks up to many hotels/motels that I have paid a lot more for. It is obvious that owner/manager takes pride in what they do.
We were traveling all day from Texas and just needed a place to sleep on our way to California.
The hotel was very clean.
The beds were so comfortable and the breakfast provided the next morning was excellent.
This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in anywhere for the price.
The lady who checked us in and showed us our room was so kind and friendly!
This is a great, old time motel in a small town that is very reasonable, safe and you get a good nights sleep without spending a lot on a hotel room, like at most other hotels
This hotel needs major maintenance and repairs. I was assigned a room with a broken window. The manager graciously moved me to a better room. The staff are professional and friendly. The front door was broken--a very poor first impression.
Our car could be parked right in front of our door so we were comfortable leaving our cats in the car. Pet friendly option if we had decided to bring them in. Refrigerator and microwave. Spacious room and comfy bed. Very clean!!!!
The restaurant was cancelled, the staff responded quickly, politely and were fantastic, unlike Booking.com that was totally unresponsive, hotel cancelled with no charge
