Auersthal is in the Weinviertel (wine quarter) region of Northeast Austria. Small villages lined with heurigers (wine cellars) dot the countryside. The area is best known for Gruner Veltliner but many other wines are also available at unbelievably reasonable prices. May is a wonderful time to visit this area especially if you love asparagus (spargel). Every restaurant in the area has a page of spargel specialties, including the ubiquitous and wonderful cream of asparagus soup. Fields of bright yellow rapeseed (used to make canola oil) against a backdrop of green make for gorgeous country views. Many paved, off-road bicycle trails connect the heurigers for a unique and fun experience. Little known to Americans, we highly recommend this area as a special, easy-on-the-budget place to visit.
