Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaIt is a bit older, but this didn’t bother me since the service and dinner was great. A little bit of a walk up a hill if you want to head into town. But they offer a shuttle service to the station every 30 minutes in the morning so it’s not a major issue.
Excellent service from staff, from start to finish they are always willing to help and assist. The dinner and breakfast were great and very large traditional meals. It’s a convenient way to experience traditional meals without waiting in lines. And you get a yukata for dinner

FranceThey did not answer my questions on booking before coming. Even though I asked them in Japanese.
This was our first time in a ryokan and we couldn't have a better experience. The rooms were beautiful. The futon comfortable. The onsen with a view on the city. There was a lot of explanations on how to use the onsen and enjoy our meal, which was perfect for us newbies. The traditional meals were a great a experience.

SpainIf I was to chose something to improve, it would be the bed. I was not really expecting much from a futon, but it still was definitely harder than other ones I have slept on. Also, the room I slept on had a traditional translucent window on one of the walls, so in the morning you will absolutely get greeted by the sunlight, like it or not. It added to the beautiful aesthetics of the room, though.
The traditional room was beautiful and had everything necessary for the stay. The views from the room were majestic, being able to see the whole of Takayama. Even though it is relatively far from the station, it is still right next to the old district. And of course, great service from the people working there. Definitely would stay again.

United KingdomThe futon and pillow were really hard and uncomfortable. I could hear upstairs walking a little too much unfortunately and there was no blind so impossible to block the light, hopefully I rise early so it wasn’t too much of a problem.
Great location and fantastic view over Takayama from my room. The 2 onsen were amazing with an option of an outdoor one. The room was spacious with a lovely bathroom which I sadly never used as I used the onsen showers.

AustraliaWould of preferred the option for western breakfast over the traditional Japanese. Pillows are the beanbag ones and very uncomfortable. Place is older and seems a bit overpriced for what you get.

ItalyThe only thing that may be "unconfotble" is that the ryokan is located 15min from the JR Takayama station and the last part of the walk is on after a uphill road. But they have a shuttle navy service so I recomend to contact them in advice for assistance at your arrival in case should you have heavy luggages.
This small family ryokan has been a wonderfull surprise for us. It is a very traditional and authentic ryokan with amazing view from the room and lovely Onsen. Special mention for the dinner. It was very good and with so many things to try! Kind staff: I would recomend to anyone to spend a night there.

NorwayThe dinner was a bit overpriced, so we decided not to go for that. The walls aren't very well sound proofed (not a major issue, but we could hear other guests).
The personal service started as soon as we entered the door. Our suitcases had already been taken up to the room and one of the staff members showed us the room (which was more like a flat, let's be honest). The style was a traditional Japanese room, with stunning views overlooking the city from our "balconyroom". Breakfast was nice as well. They have a basic, but good onsite onsen for guests and provide kimonos for their guests. Highly recommend this place, even though it is a walk. PS. They offer free shuttle to the trainstation which is great, signup in reception.

United StatesThis isn't as luxurious a ryokan as some of the others that we stayed at during our trip, but it's also a much more reasonable price point. For example, our room was on the smaller side and didn't let us spread out as much as ryokan that cost $100+ more per night. The bathroom was compartmentalized and so it felt smaller and was harder for both of us to get ready at the same time in the morning. That said, it was a perfectly nice place to stay and you do get a lot for the price. We would happily stay there again.
This ryokan is located on a hillside above the historic district, and our room had a beautiful view out over Takayama. The staff were friendly and helpful (most spoke English). Although we had a wooden bathtub in our room, we used the public baths and also reserved the private outdoor bath once. All of the bathing facilities were spacious and clean. We ate dinner and breakfast one time each during our stay - the coursed dinner included local ingredients like hida beef and the grilled miso at breakfast was delicious. It's a great location for people who are willing to walk up a hill to get to/from town and the hotel. There are hiking paths just a few minutes' walk further up the hill (that connect to the Higashiyama walking course), and it's a short (but steep) walk to Takayama's historic district, the morning markets, Takayama Jinya, etc.

United StatesRooms ARE on the spartan side, at first glance.
I was underwhelmed by the facilities at first-definitely rustic. However, balanced against the view, the breakfasts, the price, the setting, it was excellent. It was nearby a park and a walking trail. It was easy to walk into and back from town. The onsen was lovely. We booked a private bath at night and it was a delight. NOT TO BE MISSED: book the evening meal. Exquisite and excellent value. Wear your yukata there.

SingaporeStaff seemed a little unfriendly.
Onsen was great! They swapped the male and female onsen after midnight so you get to experience different views. This inn is located up the hill but there’s shuttle bus provided to the train station. There’s parking space outside the inn too. They offer private onsen for booking at ¥1000x But we didn’t opt for it since there’s an outdoor bath in the room overlooking Takayama city, already super great for private soak. Room was clean and comfortable.

United KingdomIf you book dinner, please bear in mind that you will have to arrive before 18:00 because it will be served at 19:00 the latest.
Their dinner is a pure kaiseki experience which includes local Hida beef. Breakfast is also traditional, served early in the morning. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the Takayama village from the entrance of the hotel. The property has an Onsen (public, open air bath) which closes around 23:00 and you can also book a massage. We stayed in a Japanese room with a cypress-wood bathtub and futon beds which were prepared during our dinner. The World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go can be easily reached by bus (50 min).
